While a picnic for one may sound frightfully lonely in most cases, a picnic for one in the Garden of Les Halles in Paris while savoring a French roll and salad from famed baker Eric Kayser, can only be described as an earthly pleasure that you hope exists in heaven. When faced with the gorgeous array of hearty, delicious take away sandwiches and decadent desserts, it was almost crazy to order a salad, especially at a boulangerie renowned the world over for its bread! Made from the finest ingredients and described in countless reviews as having the right balance of crisp and chewy, people from far and wide know and seek out one of Eric Kayser’s five locations when in Paris. For me, after a rich traditional French dinner the night before, a salad was all the calories I would allow myself and thankfully it included one of their legendary French rolls. So there I sat on a brisk autumn day enjoying a refreshingly light smoked salmon salad surrounded by verdant trees, the soaring 13th century Gothic architecture of St. Eustache, and contemplating Henri de Miller’s iconic monumental sculpture Ecoute (Listen).

I bet you had a marvelous time in Paris! I didnt’ get a chance to try those delicious bread. In fact, I didn’t even know about it haha. Bummer. Salad is good after a big dinner the night before. I second that!

You had everything necessary for the perfect picnic. A beautiful location, great weather, and top quality food. I love that park, we used to sit on the benches there. I actually eat my first real (French) eclair at that park. Beautiful photos and thanks for the memories.

I think a picnic for one sounds relaxing and serene. And with a lovely salad like that it sounds pretty delicious!
nothing compares to French bread, and honestly I think it’s one of those things I miss the most about living in the US. I have no idea why the bread is always chewy here, even the one made by French bakers. Maybe the weather. I am glad you enjoyed your stay, because I hear so many complaints about Parisians

Back in time when I pranced around Europe on a tight budget…Paris and picnics by myself have lingered some of the best memories for me. I’ve been back a few times since…and I still insist to enjoy their very generous selections in a picnic form.
