The signature dish at Bonefish Grill is a luscious mound of tender, crispy shrimp napped in a creamy, spicy sauce reminiscent of New Awlins’ remoulade. Each mouthwatering morsel reminds you why the Bang Bang Shrimp is the most popular dish on the menu and why you’ll be back for more. Settling into a comfortable booth awash with the warmth of the winter sun, my dining partner and I immediately perused the cocktail menu where classic and contemporary drinks feature fresh fruit and juices for a coastal seaside twist. Savoring a refreshing Blood Orange Paloma Sauza Hornitos tequila, Solerno blood orange liqueur, fresh grapefruit juice + hint of lime) for $6 (!) and a Classic Sidecar + Mango Twist (the classic brandy cocktail given a modern twist with mango juice – $5!) just made the Bang Bang Shrimp all the better.

While the Bang Bang Shrimp is a guest favorite, my personal favorite is the Seared Sesame Ahi Tuna Sashimi. Ruby red ahi dredged in crunchy sesame seeds in a nest of crispy romaine and drizzled with wasabi sauce alongside a ribbon of sriracha to drag it through, is something I can’t resist.
By this time we were on cocktail #2 – the Parker Margarita and the Blackberry Cherry Guava Mojito (Cruzan Guava Rum, black cherries, fresh mint, lime – $8.5) were both fantastic. The Parker Margarita ($7.5) is founder Chris Parker’s favorite cocktail and, finished with OJ and Grand Marnier, you will totally understand why. I can’t get over the fact that all the drinks are priced below $10 – even the martinis – that’s so unheard of these days for cocktails of this caliber.
Moving on to the soup course – you can add a cup of soup to every entree for $3.5. We had to try their Corn Chowder + Lump Crab because, well, it’s a seafood restaurant! It did not disappoint – the cup was more like a small bowl and the chowder was just right – not too thin, not too thick, pureed sweet corn providing much of the creaminess and a generous amount of crab. I ordered the Grilled Fish of the Day and chose Salmon with a Herb Pesto sauce. Meat lovers will be glad to hear that there are non-seafood choices on the menu: a Wood-Grilled Filet Mignon, American Kobe Burger, Lily’s Chicken, Fontina Chop and others, as well as several vegetarian offerings.
Guests have a choice of Parmesan fries, pesto couscous salad or Asian slaw to accompany your entree selection. Located in Tustin Marketplace, this is Bonefish Grill’s first foray into the Orange County market and the only other California location is in Los Angeles (Northridge). Their story began in January of 2oo0 in St. Petersburg, Florida and they’ve been spreading happiness and fresh seafood from purveyors committed to excellence around the U.S. since. Their website “HAPPINESS HAS ARRIVED”, and I have to agree! Perhaps its the economies of scale that allow them to bring such amazing value to the table – it is remarkable given the quality and, in today’s economy, your wallet will appreciate it.
