"Fresno

More than mouthwatering burgers made from 100% vegetarian fed, hormone & antibiotic free, all natural beef, charbroiled to your perfection, newly opened Eureka! boasts a selection of 40 craft beers on tap that would please even the most discerning beer snob. Add weekly events like Steal the Glass and tap takeovers, live music, and a modern-rustic space warmed with reclaimed pre-war Douglas fir, recycled steel, and North American hardwoods retrieved from historic barns, factories, and whiskey distilleries punctuated with colorful original artwork (by local Huntington Beach artist Nichole Blackburn) and you have a recipe for a good time.

"Osso

Osso Buco Riblets – as soon as you take a bite of these tender morsels swathed in spicy aioli you’ll know why they are one of the most popular items on the menu!

We ordered three appetizers for the four of us and my guilty pleasure favorite was the housemade Lollipop Corndogs ($7.50). The all natural Polish sausage dipped in sweet cornmeal batter is served with three sauces: spicy porter mustard, homemade ketchup, and ranch. Talk about perfect beer food! You’ll be fighting over who gets the 5th.

"Corn

Add Eureka!’s Bruschetta ($6.95) of fresh diced tomato, basil, goat cheese, lemon zest, and balsamic vinaigrette and you have a well-rounded selection of appies and a vegetable (err fruit) serving for the day.

It was tough deciding among the mouthwatering burgers, fresh salads, and house signature dishes like pan-seared salmon, beer braised duck sausage, and lump crab cakes. Being lunch, the four of us decided that to get a true taste of the Eureka! concept we had to go with a couple of the burgers and, for my healthy angle here, the unique vegetarian burger and an amazing salad. And I was so happy we did because the grilled Watermelon Quinoa Salad ($11.25) was a delicious combination of flavors and textures. The grilled sweet watermelon wedges drizzled with balsamic, peppery arugula and homemade quinoa salad with feta cheese and toasted walnuts with a bright lemon vinaigrette is something I plan on copying at home very soon. Look for the copy cat recipe soon!

"Grilled

The burgers were perfectly cooked to our specification of medium and were every bit as juicy and flavorful as you would expect from 100% vegetarian fed, hormone & antibiotic free, all natural beef. We were unanimous in our love for the Fresno Fig Burger ($11.25) and could totally see why it is a favorite. The homemade fig marmalade comingling with melted goat cheese brought a unique cheese board combination to the succulent burger and, of course, crispy bacon makes everything taste divine. Topped with jumble of fresh arugula, chopped tomatoes and onions every bite elicited nods and audible Mmmmms of enjoyment.

"Fresno

For runny egg fans and chile heads there’s the Jalapeño Egg Burger ($11.50). The fried egg was indeed runny and smoky, spicy chipotle sauce and jalapeño peppers gave the burger nice heat. Topped with bacon and a side of hand cut fries it was excellent – but a knife and fork are required for this one.

"Jalapeno

Finally, the Veggie Beet Burger ($10.50) was the most interesting vegetarian burger I’ve ever had. Interesting meaning nice and pleasant enough, but lacking a little in personality – kind of like that blind date in college. The burger is a unique and vibrantly colored homemade blended red beet and bean patty served with homemade zucchini pickles, tomato, red onion, and arugula tossed in lemon vinaigrette. For me, the burger needed a tad more texture, perhaps leaving the beans a little chunkier would do the trick. Still, the flavors were good and those zucchini pickles and mega onion rings were amazing.

"Veggie

We were stuffed, but had to end on a sweet note, especially since Alexia insisted early on that we had to leave room for Eureka’s famous Goldengate Butterscotch Rum Pudding ($6.00). It was a lovely note to end on, as was the special glass of Beach City Brewery’s Hang Five IPA that I was able to have a sneak preview tasting of before that evening’s Steal the Glass event to celebrate the opening of Beach City Brewery in Huntington Beach. No coffee with dessert for this girl, give me beer.

Notable: Eureka! features 40 specialty craft beers on tap and a selection of 21-small batch American whiskeys – sourced from artisans in California, Iowa, Kentucky, New York, Oregon, Texas and Utah – in tribute of the 21st amendment outlawing prohibition. Additionally, a special off -menu selection features various hard-to-get and strictly allocated whiskeys like Pappy Van Winkle and offerings from the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection available to the most discerning whiskey drinkers.

And one last note: Eureka! has a terrific Happy Hour from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m. DAILY with $2 Off draft and bottled beer, $2 Off all wine, Buffalo Trace bourbon, and Fugu vodka by Ballast Point. Appetizers are available at almost half price – and this is for a regular size serving, no chintzy portions for HH here. In fact, I’m meeting two friends there this afternoon for another round of Lollipop Corn Dogs, Watermelon Quinoa Salad, and craft beers. See you there?!?
