Have you shopped at the new Grocery Outlet bargain market yet? The new individually owned grocery stores are taking Southern California by storm with their bargain prices on natural and organic foods, health and beauty products, gluten free brands, and every day grocery items.

Frozen foods include socially conscious brands like Annie’s, Morning Star and Evol.

I have heard great things about the store from friends who have shopped at the Costa Mesa location and could hardly believe the cost savings on brand name items. Of particular interest to me are their natural products and specialty food items – all conveniently labeled with the colorful NOSH label. And what an appropriate acronym! NOSH stands for Natural, Organic, Specialty, Health – you’ll be able to nosh every day with the budget-friendly prices on nutritious snacks, organic produce, and gluten free, vegan and other specialty foods.

Nuts are a fabulous source of protein and the “good” fats that your body needs.

Walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts — whatever your favorite may be — almost every type of nut has a lot of nutrition packed into a tiny package. If you have heart disease, eating nuts instead of a less healthy snack can help you more easily follow a heart-healthy diet. {Source: Mayo Clinic}

Almonds are my go-to snack and I carry a tin of almonds when I’m traveling to prevent me from buying the junk food snacks offered on the airlines. I keep bags of pistachios, pecans, and hazelnuts in the pantry to add crunch to salads and to sprinkle on top of oatmeal and pureed soups.

Grocery Outlet has a super selection of flash frozen seafood which can be fresher tasting and as high quality as the fresh seafood often sold in markets because it is flash frozen at the source versus seafood that has spent days in transport.

Frozen in clear, vacuum sealed packages, I stocked up on Wild Red Yellowfin tuna and Bay clams. We’ve had both for dinner – one night clams and linguine and the next, grilled ahi fillets brushed with sesame oil and smoked bourbon togarashi spice – and was very pleased with the quality. All the clams, except for one opened up and the ahi was virtually sushi grade. Incredible pricing too – $2.99 for the clams and $6.49 for a one lb. package of tuna!

Clams and Linguini for dinner!

So how does Grocery Outlet able to offer these low prices? They have a three-pronged approach that includes buying surpluses that occur when brands have production overruns or make packaging or labeling changes and the savings that result in buying excess inventory are then passed on to the customer. In addition to this, each store is a locally, independently owned, family business invested in their customers and their community – not a global grocery conglomerate.

At the opening of the Long Beach store this past Saturday, I was struck by the community spirit. Young athletes from Millikan High School Track & Field team were in front of the store selling water and hot dogs to raise funds for their team.

I was pleasantly surprised at the array of natural products at Grocery Outlet, including whole food items like fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans; and snack items such as trail mix, kale chips, seed crackers, and seaweed. But food isn’t the only thing that impacts our health. Anything we put on our skin gets into our body, and using products with a lot of chemicals can negatively impact our health, so I’m happy to report that Grocery Outlet carries a range of natural ingredient personal care items such as Tom’s of Maine toothpaste, Kiss my Face deodorant, and Andalou Naturals facial moisturizer, to name a few.

Most exciting, is the entrepreneurial opportunity that Grocery Outlet offers to those with the drive to achieve the American Dream.

Meet Jonathan and Jennifer Lawton, owners/operators of the new Grocery Outlet located at 6436 E. Spring Street in Long Beach, CA!

After marrying in 2003, they began working at their hometown Grocery Outlet store in Chehalis, WA in 2005. They worked hard to learn the business and within 2 years owned their first store in Vacaville, CA. They operated that store for 1 year and then spent 8 years in Northern California operating the Chico and Oroville Grocery Outlets.The Lawtons successfully operated their stores by developing unique, cutting edge marketing tactics and engaging in community programs. When they were given the opportunity to move to Long Beach and pioneer the Los Angeles market entry, they jumped on it. They love the overall optimism and opportunity that Long Beach brings, including the great people, beaches and schools.
