Unleash Your Inner Martha

This week’s obsession is CAKE! Not just any ole cake, but a cake made from scratch and tricked out by: YOU! Yes, think “Build a Bear” (probably not the best reference for folks with no experience in the kid department), but for cakes.  A few weeks ago, BlackMarket Bakery invited a group of Orange County food bloggers to their kitchen to get our feedback on their newest offering and test the concept by letting us loose to create our own cake. We paired up and unleashed our creativity on a two-tiered, expertly frosted cake for a  fun, low-key, everyone’s a winner Cake War!

The general consensus was that this idea is appealing on many levels: it’s economical, it’s a fun party idea, it gives you a chance to unleash your creativity and revel in the praise that’s sure to follow. I, for one, had never decorated a cake, heck, I rarely bake, period. But that evening, my partner, Quyen of Kitchen Runway, and I put our heads together and decided on a Lunar New Year theme and were really excited about how our cake turned out! We were the Zen Masters!

The fun times and collective talent of all the teams can be seen in the video, but for your viewing pleasure: Kim (Rustic Garden Bistro) and Josie (Daydreamer Desserts) were feeling the love and designed a cake that would make any bride-to-be blush with anticipation.

The cake creations are limitless, especially considering you have 9 cake flavors, 3 delectable buttercream frostings, and 3 borders to choose from! With names like Mr. Peepers, Youthful Crush, and Bollywood Star, and at a mere $49 for a frosted, two-tier cake, who can resist? What special occasion do you have coming up?

This is such a crazy fabulous idea. I’m so envious…great events seem to always take place in your parts. I seem to be missing a lot of the fun out there!!! I think I should maybe consider a move to the warmer West coast.

Priscilla…your decorative cake can grace my sweet table any time ;o)

    Ciao for now,
    Claudia

This is so cool! What a great idea! March 15th (yes, “the Ides”, I know) is our 3rd anniversary of moving into our own home so I would so love to build a cake for this! Too bad I’m so far away!

Thanks everyone! It was really fun and you don’t have to be “experienced” at cake decorating – I had zero, but Blackmarket has all sorts of decorations that make it really easy to create a pro-looking cake :-)

Thanks for showing the cake I made with Josie!!! That was a load of fun – I definitely thought “Build a Bear” for cakes.

It won’t be long before I’m buying one of these for my own personal enjoyment.
